Precenicco

An itinerary of historical and naturalistic views.
Precenicco is a territory rich in historical and cultural peculiarities that evoke distant eras: from prehistoric times to the thirteenth century. Naturalistic views of the river Stella and the lagoon area will gift you with incredible memories.

Foci dello Stella Nature Reserve

One of the most characteristic environments of the regional lagoon area is the Foci dello Stella Regional Nature Reserve; an area of considerable naturalistic value. This protected area covers 1377 hectares, including the mouth of the river Stella and some typical lagoon areas presenting considerable variations in salinity and temperature, along with canals, mudflats and sandbanks. The heart of the nature reserve consists of an extensive water network reaching the lagoon. The rare and precious reeds biotope, is a constant and remarkable aspect of the Foci dello Stella reserve. Of high naturalistic value are a great variety and number of birds inhabiting and animating this marshy environment in different seasons. Many of said birds stop by during migrations, some spend the winter here and others find here the ideal habitat for nesting.

Fort of Precenicco

The Fort of Precenicco was designed in 1910 by architect Rocchi, and never being involved in any action of the Great War, it has been well maintained to this day. The fort has been used as a powder magazine until the 90s. Its single-store structure is surrounded by a moat filled with water, which was once connected with the river Stella. The moat is provided with a revolving bridge, which is now inoperative.

Il ‘Canevòn’

The ‘Canevòn’ is a mighty building: 16.50 meters wide, 76.80 meters long and 9 meters high. It was built by Antonio Cassis Faraone, Count of Precenicco, between 1792 and 1794, and it has always served as a granary. The building was part of the redevelopment project of Precenicco, whose land had to be reclaimed and protected from the Tagliamento floods.

Lowland Forest

Bando di Sotto is a forest covering about 10 hectares. This is what remains of the lowland forests of the Bassa Friulana (Low Friuli), belonging to the ancient ‘Silva lupanica’: the great forest that after the last glacial period covered the entire plain between the Livenza and Isonzo rivers in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Martino – parish church

In ancient times, the church of Precenicco dedicated to San Martino di Tours sat in the village of Zuecca, along the banks of the Stella river where the riverfront forms a curve. In 1625 the patriarch of Aquileia granted permission to demolish the old church which was smaller in size than the current one and subjected to continuous river floods.

Chiesetta della Beata Vergine della Neve – Titiano church

The church was built between the thirteenth and fourteenth century, and later remodelled during the fifteenth century; the rectangular hall was built by the Teutonic Knights who in Precenicco managed the river port from which knights, merchants, confreres, and even German-speaking pilgrims leaving for the Holy Land embarked. The Vergine di Titiano was the object of worship among the rural communities of the Stella basin. A legend in particular is linked to the statue of the “Madone Pizule” (or the small Madonna, of Gothic style and in olive wood, so-called to distinguish it from the larger Renaissance statue), which disappeared several times from the church of the village to which it had been carried, to reappear along the banks of the river next to the abandoned church. This would be the reason why the parish priest decided to rebuild the church with the help of the population. The church looks like a small and ancient casket sitting in the suggestive green theatre shaped by the Stella river which flows behind it.
