Palazzolo dello stella
An itinerary between waters and woods
Palazzolo is crossed from north to south by the Stella river, the main navigable resurgent river in the area. Starting from its mouth, it is possible to have a tour on a small boat and reach the picturesque port of Rivarotta, which is simply a unique place.
Stella River
The unique and uncontaminated nature, swampy areas rich in marshes of extraordinary beauty, and the beautiful parks of the Castle of Flambruzzo and Villa Ottelio Savorgnan in Ariis, touched by its waters, make the Stella a river full of charm. Once an important artery for transport and connection between the High and Middle Friulian plains and the sea, but also essential for war strategies, today the Stella is one of the most fascinating rivers in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Historical notes
Probably Palazzolo dello Stella already existed in Roman times, but the first certain documents mentioning it date back to the late Middle Ages; in 1349 the lords of Palazzolo supported the Patriarch of Aquileia in the struggles against the count of Gorizia.
In 1420 Palazzolo became a possession of the Venetian Republic, traditionally known as “La Serenissima”, turning into a fief of the powerful Savorgnan family in 1512.
When the Republic of Venice fell, Palazzolo was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy under Napoleon; it then passed under Austrian control and to finally become part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
Palazzolo dello Stella includes the fractions of Fraida, Piancada and Modeano.

Chiesa di Sant’Antonio del Turgnano
In the fraction of Piancada there is a small church dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate, which was surrounded by the Turgnano wood. The original building dating back to the sixteenth century was completely rebuilt in 1856. The current neo-Gothic style building presents a rectangular hall with a ceiling reminiscent of an upturned boat’s hull, and an apse hosting the altar with a sixteenth-century wooden statue depicting Sant’Antonio Abate.
