Muzzana del Turgnano
An itinerary between nature, history and taste
Muzzana is a characteristic village of the Bassa Friulana (Low Friuli) located between the mouths of the Cormor torrent and the Turgnano river, from which it takes its name. Thanks to the presence of some lowland woods which are the remains of an ancient forest, Muzzana del Turgnano is of particular environmental interest.
San Vitale
This neoclassical building presents a wide nave and a solemn transept enriched by majestic twin columns and completed by a dome. The façade is characterized by decorative stone slabs and a lunette above the portal portraying Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd. The latter has been created by the mosaic school of Spilimbergo (1954) and designed by Fred Pittino. Inside the church there are five altars and the most important is the marble main altar with a precious tabernacle (eighteenth century) and the statues of the San Gervasio and Protasio on the sides. The two altars of the nave are twins and belong to a Friulian altarist between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: the left one is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary (Madonna del Rosario), while the right one is dedicated to Sant’Antonio di Padova. The most valuable piece is the monumental “Nacchini” organ at the entrance. The organ has been built in 1750 by the Dalmatian Pietro Nacchini for the church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Udine, and has arrived in Muzzana after the Napoleonic Suppression. It is one of the most important organs preserved in Friuli, still highly appreciated by experts for its extraordinary ‘voice’ and the perfection of its sounds. Above the keyboard, you can read a precious inscription on how to combine registrations, suggested by Nacchini himself.
Lowland Forest
The two lowland broad-leaf forests called “Bosco Baredi – Selva d’Arvonchi” and “Bosco Coda di Manin”, cover respectively an area of about 170 hectares and 150 hectares. Characterized by the presence of oaks and hornbeams, these woods are the largest in the Venetian-Friulian Plain, and are part of the last remains of the ancient Silva Magna or Silva Lupanica: the forest that after the last ice age began to cover the entire Po Valley. These forests have therefore survived centuries of resource exploitation by men and climatic crises, and still today constitute an important biodiversity treasure.
Villa Rubini
Villa Rubini dates back to 1909 and is currently housing the Civic Library, thanks to its central and strategic position among several public spaces. The villa was initially owned by the Municipality and later donated to the Parish Church of San Vitale, which used the building as an archive. In 2017, however, the villa was granted to the Municipality to be used as the new library.

Boscovia della Bassa Friulana
Admire this magnificent territory thanks to a fascinating two wheels tour called “Boscovia della Bassa Friulana”. The route, accessible to everyone (even children and elders), allows you to cross the woods of the neighboring municipalities such as Castions di Strada, Carlino, Palazzolo dello Stella and Precenicco.
Villa Muciana and Parco degli Orbi
Villa Muciana is to be found on Piazza San Marco (the main square) next to the war memorial; it is a building dating back to the early 900, representing the austere and sober style of the time. The park next to the villa, called “Parco degli Orbi”, is a project born from the historical events of “Li Orbi de Mozana”, which paths tell the story of the place.
“Tuber Magnatum Pico” truffle
In the woods of Muzzana you can find the “Tuber Magnatum Pico”, which from a culinary perspective is absolutely the most precious truffle variety. The extraordinary aromatic complexity of the truffle from Muzzana is to be thanked, in addition to the efforts to preserve the forest and truffle trees, especially to the huge presence of wild garlic which blooms copiously in the area. Other factors influencing the aromatic notes of the Tuber Magnatum Pico are the leaves, flowers and plants present locally, and of course the composition of the considerably saline soil. Grass, moreover, builds the flavor dimension of these truffles. The Muzzana Amateur Truffle Association (Associazione Muzzana Amatori Tartufi) organizes a fair where you can taste this local delicacy.
