Carlino
An itinerary through ancient roads and nature
Carlino is represented by cultivated areas, woods, the river strips of the Zellina and Cormor rivers and the Marano lagoon. Walking in nature and on the ancient Romea Strata Aquileiense is something simple and natural that leads to the discovery of ourselves.
Le Fornaci della Chiamana – archaeological site
This archaeological site is located in Chiamana, in the southern part of the Municipality of Carlino, in a suggestive landscape and natural environment surrounded by crops, meadows and vineyards which guarantee a plethora of great agri-food products. We find ourselves, indeed, in the heart of the Annia DOC wine area, named after the ancient Roman road that crossed it; here, intensely fragrant white wines and full-bodied red wines are produced.
The archaeological site, discovered and investigated by Luisa Bertacchi between 1971 and 1983, contains one of the largest and most articulated ceramic and brick production areas among those found so far in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
The site is to be found in the Charter of Cultural Heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia, where Chiamana is counted among the other ancient residential and productive settlements that used to exist in the territory of Carlino and the Aquileian plain.
Romea Strata Aquileiense
Walkers and pilgrims can enjoy a stretch of the ancient Romea Strata Aquileiense: an itinerary of faith and culture that crosses our territory, being part of the religious routes that started from the Balkans and reached Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Jerusalem.
Fiume Zellina
The Zellina river originates from springs located just under Castions di Strada. The length of the main tract of this river is about 20 km and its water flow was once, before the reclamation work, much larger than it is today.
The spring waters flow perpetually fast, abundant and fresh to the town of Carlino. Here, near the mill and the church of S. Thomas Becket, there was the ancient “Port of San Tomaso”.

Journey among the historical and sacred monuments of the territory.
The Parish Church of Carlino is dedicated to San Tommaso Apostolo and is located in the center of the town. The church was built in 1735 on the site of a previous church and consecrated in 1772; its interior is rich in works of art including frescoes by Domenico Fabris, canvases by Antonio Fantini, Pompeo Marino Molmenti and Michelangelo Grigoletti. Precious marbles enrich the altars made by the sculptor Giacomo Spiera, while the wood works were made by F.lli Filipponi and Giovanni Costantini.
The other churches in the area are: Chiesa dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio in S. Gervasio, Chiesa di S. Domenico al Casino, Chiesa Campestre di S. Tomaso Becket, Santuario della Beata Vergine della Salute, Chiesa di S. Antonio da Padova in Villabruna and Chiesa di Maria Ausiliatrice in S. Gervasio.
